For Proofreaders
The first part of Grammatika’s proofreading test simulates an actual
proofreading project by asking applicants to first compare a
chapter’s manuscript against typeset page proofs and then continue
with a cold proofread of the typeset pages. The Chicago Manual of
Style, 15th edition, is used as the basis for this section of the
test. To obtain proofreading certification through Grammatika,
applicants must:
- use traditional proofreading
symbols to mark errors.
- find and mark editor’s
alterations (EAs) including spelling, grammar, punctuation,
style, and consistency.
- find and mark printer’s errors
(PEs) including formatting of type, paragraphs, line breaks,
dropped text, margins, and justification.
- define each correction as
either an EA or a PE.
For Copyeditors
The first part of Grammatika’s copyediting test simulates an actual
copyediting project by asking applicants to edit a short manuscript.
The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition, is used as the basis for
this section of the test. To obtain copyediting certification
through Grammatika, applicants must:
- use the Track Changes feature
in Microsoft Word to mark errors and make comments and suggestions for
revision.
- find and mark basic typos and
errors including spelling, grammar, punctuation, style, and
consistency.
- find and suggest revisions for
deeper issues such as organization, sense, clarity, and flow.
In both the proofreading and
copyediting tests, each error is weighted with a point value based
on its magnitude. For example, a spelling error is considered more
crucial than the use of the word which when that would be correct.
All such errors, however, do count, and points are also assigned for
queries, which are used to determine the critical thinking skills and
confidence level of each editor.
Grammatika staff members review each test to assess an aggregate
score based on a ten-point scale. This score determines whether an
editor is qualified to possess the Grammatika certified seal.
Applicants receiving an 8.0 or higher are certified; those earning a
9.5 or higher are eligible for the added distinction of expert.
The second part of each Grammatika test is optional and consists of
25 multiple choice questions that demonstrate each applicant’s
knowledge of grammar and editing rules, as well as additional style
proficiencies, including APA. Editors who receive at least 9.5 on
part I and 85 percent correct on part II are awarded expert editor
certification. |
